Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition Review

Drinkbox Studios has re-released their hit indie title Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition on next gen consoles, along with the Xbox 360. This version of the game includes all the bonus content not originally packaged with the title. Right now it is free for Gold members on the Xbox One, but it costs $14.99 for PlayStation 4 and other consoles.

Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition is a great Metroidvania-style indie beat ’em up game. The visuals are superb on next gen consoles, and the gameplay is fantastic. From the great sense of humor to the arena-style battles that players encounter throughout the game, Guacamelee is a downright spectacular title.

The game also features a number of platforming sections. The platforming in this game is a mixed bag. Sometimes it is great and can provide epic moments of gameplay, other times it can be so tedious and difficult that it might bring some players to the point of shutting the game off, uninstalling it, and never going  back. I really did enjoy the platforming in the game for the most part, but I really just could not stand certain sections. The controls feel the most unresponsive and clunky during this part of the gameplay. It takes too long for the game to respond, and it causes the player to die over and over again.

Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition’s distinct art style also improves the game a lot. The way the game looks is similar to Ubisoft’s Rayman Legends, or more recent game Valiant Hearts – The Great War, which I have yet to download. The game also has a very unique sense of humor. For instance, the player gains new powers by breaking statues. After the statues are broken, a goat will appear, and transform into a man. He scolds the player for breaking his precious statue, but figures he’ll teach a new button combo to the player anyway.

Guacamelee is a very good game. It is probably one of the best things that can be found currently on next generation consoles. It is a game that should definitely be looked into, and most certainly downloaded for anyone who is a member of Xbox Live Gold. You can get your free copy of Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition here.  For all things gaming, keep it here on NextGenerationGamer!
